EXHIBITION NOTES.

CHRISTCHURCH, March 6.

The fruit and dahlia show, which opened in the Exhibition this afternon and will be continued to-morrow, is stated by lead ing horticulturists to be much the largest and best that has ever been held in thf-. colony. Perhaps the principal feature of the sliow is the magnificent display of fruit. It is in thjs section that the mo<;t marked advance is noticeablo, especially in the collections sent for exhibition only A fine collection of apples and pears, sent from Central Otago, is quite a feature of the show. In the ©action for pot plants the cxhiHts are of a very high standard, and competition was keen. Thie groups, are effective and well displayed. A striking feature of the show is the particularly fine color of much of the fruit, caused, doubtleiss, by the dry summer. Seventyseven cases, or practically one ton of golden chassela&, grapes, arrived in perfect condition at the Exhibition to-day from the Government's experimental station at Waerenga, in the Waikato Half w&re placed on exhibition, and half sold to ono of the concessionaires for the sale of fruit in the building, who retailed thtem at 6d a pound to the public as fast as he could unpack the boxes.

The orchestra gave coraceTts afternoon and evening an the Concert Hall to big attendances, and the Besses Band had a large audience on« the .sports ground in the afternoon, but the evening saw the principal attraction of the djay in the form of a combisned outdoor concert by the Besses and a display of fireworks.

The night was perfect for both events, and there was am eoormous crowd to ■gratify the double •enjoyment of eyes, and ears. A oolossal portrait of the late Mr Seddon was the feature of the fireworks display. The portrait was a remarkably close likeness and was loudly cheeiredi by immense crowds. The total •attendance at the Exhibition to-day was 16,568, which makes the aggregate to date 1,418,665. Over two hundred entries have been received for -the Pet Show in "Wonderland" on Friday. The motor gymkhana fixed for Saturday afternoon will commence with a pamade of motor cars thirou'gh the city, amd wall include many novel events on the sports ground. Preparations aTe being made for the international fire brigade competitions to be held from the 18thi to 23rd inst., which are expected to rival the "recent band contests in, attendance, interest, aaid importance. The Easter holidays will be made a very attractive period at the- Exhißition. The Southern, Union, and Al•hambra Football Clubs of Dunedin, and also the Wellington dub have definitely arranged 1 to play off their amnmal matches with local clubs at Easter on the Exhibition sports .ground, and several other games are expected to take place there. Special firework displays will be given at Easter, and the United Bands of Hope demonstration on Easter Monday should prove a populaoNfjinct-on.
