SLAUGHTERMEN'S STRIKE
BELFAST, ISLINGTON AND ASHBUR-
TON MEN FINED.
COURTS ADVICE TO THE MEN
IPBESS ASSOCIATION.]
CHRISTCELURCH, March 6.
The Arbitration Court, gave judgment to-day v& the slaughtermen's strike at Belfast and Islington. It found them guilty of taking part in the strike and acting in combination to refuse to work because the companies would not agree to their demands. A few of the defendants were dismissed, but the rest were fined £5 each and costs spread over the whole body. The Court expressed the hop© that tbe men would consult their own interests and their employers' by returning to work without delay. The companies' offer to discuss the matter and make the rate* finally settled retrospective was very fair, and the men weTe ill-advised in not accepting it.
The case against 50 Ashburton slaughtermen was then taken, and as it was on all fours with the others the same fines were impossible. ' It is possible that most of the men will pay the fines at once; if not distress warrants will be issued.
