CITY BEING STEADILY REBUILT.

SOME PALATIAL HOSTELRIES.

SAN FRANCISCO, February 7.

Excessive rains during the month of January have made California generally, and San Francisco in particular, rather disagreeable. The rainfall has been the moat excessive since 1890, and several storms have been of unprecedented severity. In spite of this complication steady progress towards the rebuilding of the city Toas been made, and the people have been gay, after their habit. . Concerts and theatrical exhibitions of all kinds have been liberally patronised. At a farewell recital given by Schumann Heink about 5000 people were in attendance. Hotel accommodation is improving constantly, and the hostelries can now take care of some 12,000 visitors at a time. It is c* pected double that number can be accommodated within a few months The magnificejt Fairmont Hotel and some others of lesser importance are nearly ready fol use. The new plans for the Palace Hotel are interesting, as the original idea foi rebuilding has expanded considerably, ay it has beoome evident the city is to regain importance. The new Palace, with the site, will represent the investment of five and a half million dollars. It will be owned by a syndicate of capitalists. It has now been decided that the new structure, which will shortly be begun, ishall cover the entire site formerly occupied. The main building will be nine stories high, with an extension of two stories in height on the Jessie strtet side. The walls of the old Palace have been razed after a labor of months. The i>ew Palace will contain ball rooms,- palm garden, and other features similar to those which made the former structure famous, but on a more munificent scale.
