The sudden storm at 1 p.m. on Tuesday did considerable damage to the telegraph lines. One was down at Opunake, another near Nerinanby, and another near Kakaramea. They were all set right in the evening. One Hawera linesman did % :record trip to Opunake, fixed things up there, and then in the dark repaired the break at Nocmanby. Last December many pupils of the Hawera District High School competed at the exhibition of school work hejd in Wanganui. The certificates for the aTt section have just come to hand. The school gained distinction in brushidirawing, painting, composition, and painting from still life. Miss Emma Murtagh gained special honor for illuminating, and Miss Ella Villars for design work. Special brushwork drawings were done by May Aris, xuta Strack, Emily Ward, Ella Sargeait. iir Bates, of Pratt and Bates, kindly framed the six drawings and these now adorn the> walls of the school central hall. The second quarter m connection with Miss Bedford's dancing classes will commence on Tuesday next, 17th inst.
