• * • A meeting of members of the Hawera and West Coast Fanciers* Society will be held on Wednesday evening at Mr Hooker's shop. Important business is connection with tha annual show next week will be transacted. • » • Excellent entries have been received for ths Poult hy next- week, and although the totals are not yet available it is expected that the numbeT will exceed that oi last year's show. One New Plymouth ■fancier wired sixty entries on Saturday. Mr Montgomery, of Palmerston, who won the North Island Championship for Brown Leghorns has entered a team and as other well known breed-eire who have won ,at the principal shows this year intend competing, the exhibition of birds should equal in point of quality the larger shows. Messrs Ekdahl and Rowe have taken up Spangkd Hamburgs, and will have a team of that pTetty and useful fowl at th© show. •* * \ So far eight cups have been promised for the West Coast challenge cup scheme suggested by Hawera Society, and there is every likelihood that the scheme will find a place on Jiext year's schedules. The donore of the cups so far offered are Dr Porritt (President of the Wanganui Society), Mr C. Pickering (President of the North Island Association), and Mr Norman Higgle, of Okoia. Mr Pickering's two cups are for Minorcas and canaries and Dr Ponritt's for one variety each of Orpingtons, Wyandottes and Leghorns. As every showing season comes round there is complaint about shows being held on Fridays and Saturdays owing to the birds having to remain cooped up over Sunday, and in some cases birds which were despatched to a show on a Wednesday do not arrive home till the following Tuesday. This feeling ~ras acceatua-ted on the return of local exhibitors' birds from^New Plymouth and Wellington lately —where both shows do not end till Saturday night— owing to the condition in which some binds were returned ; and the North Island Association would be taking a step in the right direction in disaHowing Saturday datss to be chosen by societies.

Local Jaaciers who visited New Plymouth show state that the exiUDition of Brown Leghorns was probably the finest yet seen in the North Islaad. Mr C. Clarke was awarded a commended ticket for a hen, coming next to a Crystal Palace winner. There was little to. choose between the placed birds. At Wanganui this fancier took 3rd for hen, competition being equally keen. Mr Geo. Evane sent five Leghorns to j New Plymouth, and was awarded eight tickets — surely a (record. « * « Mt D. BuTrell is making a specialty of second-prize tickets— taking five at Wanganui. At the same show Mr Fromont's Golden Wyandotbe cockerel was awarded the special. # . . - In White Wyandottes Mr Bateman has received 18 .tickets for 19 birds exhibited, including specials for cockerel and pullet at Wanganui. « » • In B3ack Orpingtons Mr G. Watte got 3wi cock and in Indian Game Ist ben at Wangamri, competition being keen. A Cauier pigeon which won the Ladies' Bracelet at the recent Timaru show has won 108 prizes in England, including a first at the Dairy Show. v ♦ • At the recent Wellington show 151 work, ing Homers competed for the championship, '~ie winner being Mr H. Bell's (Wellington) cock bird in the 400 miles class.

The .championship for Dragoons was also competed for at the Welilngton show, the winneT being owned by Mr D. Craig. This bird wao a recent Crystal Palace winner.
