AWATUNA EAST.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Mr A. Paterson, of Makaka, met with rather a bad accident yesterday. He slipped off a log and fell on an upturned axe, cutting his left arm rather severely. He was driven in to Kapcnga to Dr Maclagan's surgery, where the wound was dressed, but it will be a few days before lie- Is able to resume work.

Mr B. G. Surrfty, the Secretary of our local dairy factory, who has had a severe attack of quinsy, is now able to get about again, being able at the end of the week to attend to business. _' Mr James Penny is making good progress with Mr Gibson's house and shed oiL-the Auroa road. When the railway goes through these buildings will be next door to a railway station. Seventy dcrtes of light bush on the AuToa road north, waiting to be felled, will have to remain standing on account of tho great scarcity of workmen willing to do. such work in this prosperous locality. Every man Jack has his hands full just now, and really if there were houses we could do with a few day laborers more to •undertake the work which is going abegging just now. In your paper on Saturday we read of tho success of the local bachelors' ball with thirty couples present. In the good old dancing days we never counted a ball a success unless there were at least fifty couples present. In the dancing line surely we are on the down grade.
