THE ROADING PROBLEMS.
At the close of bis letter, printed in another column, on the reading question, |Mr Goodland expresses the, tear that he £*$ trespassed on our space.. W.e- hasten to a^sur^ him that he need have no feeling of the kind. The question^ deals with is of importance directly to the ratepayers ia Hawera and Okaiawa ridings and indirectly to many outside those ridings. In j an article some week or two ago.we,-refer-red to the difficulty of. the n^eir|<show- ! in^.ae to the South iroadSsnit it was a /case, of either borrowaag, > rating -or, letting the road go. The iastof these throe courses i» unthinkable, and so the alternative is clear. Even to keep patching the > Toad, it has been shown, would-be expensive. The position as regards the Manaia-Normanby road is not materially dissimilar. We welcome discussion in the hope that it may lead \o some suggestions of value. The very ""worst, thing is apathy. We do not be&evfe, .however, that the ratepayers are apathetic. Probably they hove not yet got over their surprise, and- even those .who have, little as they ( like- the proposal; to borrow, have a difficulty an suggefijting, a*,> acceptable alternative. HoWeyer ? that;tmay be/, now: iis the time to discaiss the queetion^ and 1 any facility,', we ; can rgive c^is,;very ,Wlyj offered. . ' . ' •
