OHAWE ROAD.

BEING DESTROYED BY HEAVY TRAFFIC.

RATEPAYERS PETITION THE COUNTY COUNCIL

For some time the ratepayers on the Ohawe road hare been urging the Hawera County Council to do something towards repairing the road, and Mr James Livingston, senr., made the Council, at a recenfc meeting, an offer to advance the Council the money for the work free of interest. The road at this end is meialled. but at the end near the sea coast it is not, and in wet weather the latter portion is generally in a very bad state and totally unfit for traffic. Winter is approaching, and the settlers on the road are evidently dreading the prospect. At last Saturday's meeting pf |Uife ffflwera County Council a petition, signed by Messrs L. T. Bear. John Mrilay, Jas. Livingston, Fred Livingston, and A. Eraeyne. was presented, requesting the Council, when reforming their by-laws regulating heavy traffic, to especially embody that portion of seqtion 130 of the Public Works Act, 1894, providing that heavy tTaffic of all kinds or any Mnd shall cease during the whole or any part of the months of May, June, July, August and September. The reason given for the request was that the Toad was becoming very bad and would soon become impassable, there being two bullock teams and two horse teams daily at work carting stones into the Hawera Borough, and the petitioners understood these would be on the road for at least two months yet. Mr Livingston, sen., attended the meet>ing, and said that on Friday night last ■there were two bullock teams carting over the road loaded "up to the hilt." His impression when coming along the Toad on Saturday morning was -that a subsoil plough would not have done more damage or cut it up more than the drays had. He did not think all tho stone they wene carting out would be sufficient to repair the damage being done. Mr Livingston, who was assured by the Chairman (Mr Marx) that the matteir would be considered when the by-la.W6 were being considered, then withdrcew. Questions by the Councillors -were followed) by an allegation that the contractors who were at pTesenfc carting 6tone over the road had a contract to cart stone for the County Council, and also one with the Borough Council, and that they

wete fulfilling the latter under the pre-

text of carrying out the former. Thus * ■« the road, which the County Council were being asked to repair and maintain wasbeing destroyed by contractore for the Borough Council, aid the County Council were getting ao assistance whatever from the municipal body. The matter is to lie dealt witih by a committee which is to meet next Saturday to consider the re-drafting of the fav-latrs. .
