THE DENEHOLES OF ESSEX.

Professor T. V. Holmes, F.G.S., told the Essex Field Club, at Stratford on Saturday, that he and Mr Cole had spent six weeks underground in the Essex depeholes in the via'nity of Grays.

It was clear, he said, that the holes, some of which -were 150 ft. deep and had extensive chambers at the foot, had beau originally made aiT6torehouses and hidingplaces j the district being contiguous to the mouth of the Thames, and thus liable to attacks from sea-robbers. The holes had been named after the Danes.
