EXCITING EXPERIENCE OF THE CREW.

AUCKLAND, January 24. Captain P. MacElwajn and the crew of the s.s.' Kawau-had an exciting time in, the early hours of Tuesday. The Kawau -was moored alongside the Mangawai wharf, and at half-past two a.m., Chief Engineer. Long .was • awakened- by flame's and smoke entering hie cabin. He promptly gave the alarm, and the captain, officers, and crew were soon hard at wok trying to suppress the flames. As at first it was impossible to get into the en-gine-room,- the fire, having, as it was afterwards ascertained, originated in one of the starboard eoal-bunkcrs, a bucket brigade was formed. When the fire in the engine-room had been got under by this method, the donkey engine was got to work pumping water, which was directed on to the seat of fire, soon subduing it. The extent of the damage will not be ascertained until o. survey has been made.
