HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting oi Ofte Hawera County Council was held on Saturday, present — Crs Marx (chair), Duirs, Davidson. Forbes, Boddie, Blai^ Bridge, Joll and Hastie.

STATUTORY HALF-HOLIDAY.

It was resolved that the statutory halflioliday be on each Wednesday during the year.

DISPUTE ABOUT METAL

L Webby wrote as follows :— "I have just heard that you are sending me notice to allow Shaw to enter my property to get boulders. Now, I am* wanting 350 Pyards of stone for my own yard and the •approach to it, and will have difficulty in getting even that amount, so if .your Council take it from me I want to know first what compensation I am to get, as it means that 1 will have to go to the Kapuni for it, which I think looks very unreasonable when I could make do with my own. What is more, Shaw has never paid for what he took last year, nor has he repaired the fence that he pulled down. So, io save trouble, I will ask you to kindly consider the matter, as he can get plenty of stone without it." A further letter from Webby contained the following: — "I intend to have it (the stone on his property) at any cost, and if anyone carts it away I'll cart it back again. I am getting it out at intervals when 1 have spare time, and advise anybody not to interfere with me."

The Chairman said he did not think they could differentiate. The stone was needed, and it should lie got from the most favorable source. He thought pro-perty-holders should be protected against damage, but did not see why. they should step aside for one particular individual.

Cr Boddio asked if the Chairman agreed that there was a limited quantity of Stone. The Chairman said he did.

Cr Boddie said that it was a hardship to take it away under the circumstances.

The Chairman said that he was afraid if they gave way they would create a dangerous precedent. The County Foreman was asked if lie thought that it would be an injustice to take the metal. / The Foreman said that he had told Mr Webby that his only remedy was to get what metal he wanted away before the contractors started — the ind'vidual must give way to the majority. The Chairman moved. That- the Council cannot see its way to assist Mr Webby in his request. Cr Davidson seconded — Carried. OTAKEHO CEMETERY.

The Department of Lands and Surveyasked the Council to nominate five trustees for the Otakeho Public Cemetery. Cr HaStio moved, That the Otakeho Public Cemetery be placed under the control of five directors', to be nominated by Cr Blair. Cr Bridge seconded. — Carried. . KAPONGA TOWN DISTRICT. The following resolution, passed at the last meeting of fhe Waimate Road Board, was read : "That the Kaponga Town Board having declined to accept terms re taking over of Eltham road offered by Hawera Coiuvty Council, the matter has again been referred back to the Waimaite Road Board This Board now recom-n-.ends the Hawera County Council to hand over control of Eltham road, that is, within the Kaponga Town Board boundaries, to Kaponga Town Board, provided the said Board agrees to take over, maintain, and keep the said portion of Eltham road^in a good state of repair, revenue receivable to be rates, etc., collectable in Kaponga town district; sections 109. 119, and 118 of the Public Works Acts Compilation Act, 1905 only to take effect with regard to Kaupokonui bridge as far as the Kaponga Town Board and Waimate Road Board and the Hawera County Council are concerned in the event of the said bridge being destroyed by fire or other accident." The Chan-maii said that the two bodies had not fallen into line, and were appealing to the Council.

Ur Bridge said he understood that the Kaponga Town Board had agreed to accept the Waimate Board's proposals. The Chairman said there was no official communication from the Kaponga Board before the meeting. He, moved, That Crs Bridge, Boddie, and the mover be a committee to deal with the matter.

Cr Hastie seconded.— Carried.

The Kaponga Town Board asked that section 69 (Kaponga domain) and section 19 (pound reserve) be vasted in their body.

The County Clerk said that the case was similar to the Otafeeho cemetery mattor. He thought that it would be in the interests of the reserve to accede to the request

Gr Hastie moved. That the reserve be handed over to the local trustees. Cr Davidson, seconded. Gr Boddie thought the trustees should be consulted.

The motion was withdrawn, and it was resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, That the matter be deferred till next meetinrt i
