HAWERA v.'sTKATFORD. Hawera and Stratford met on J'.nyly i'ark on Thursday in the first chani|>ionbhip match of th« season in the southern division. The Hawcra. team was somewhat disorganised through tho nbssme of several prominent playor.s. They played with only 10 in«n, doing without tin 1 in-side-right. Hawera opened with a sscrios of attacks and were uoon rewarded by seeing Wei ham shoot an unmistakeahlc goal after a piece of smart work. Hawera maintained tlie attack itncl after some hard battling McCarthy shot a goal. From the bully-off the- Hawnra forwards got away with the ball and within a miuute of McCarthy's score Pratt had added another goal to the local team's credit. Play was temporarily removed to mid-field, but was never taken near to tho Hawera goal. From a posing rubh McCarthy recorded his brronri goal, and shortly after stored his third, ckiily twenty minutes of the game Inning then elapsed. There was no further wore in the first half bvt- the play was in favor of Hawera. In the second spell Stratford played with more combination and dash, and made vigorous sorties on the Hav.eia backs, but all their efforts proved fruitless, and for the last fifteen or twenty minutes play was oanfined solely to tho vicinity of the Stratford goal, and during thi» time Hawera's score was added io to the extent of three goals, McCarthy, Swinburne, and V.
