MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
During next month the burgesses of Hawera
will have cast upon them the duty of elect -
ing municipal representatives for the ensuing term of two years. Members of tho present Council have but one more meeting to attend to complete thpir term of ' office, and it is said that at least three of them will not seek re-election. In view of this circumstance it is necessary that ratepayers should give the matter immediate consideration and persuade suitable men to offer themselves as candidates. Although many are willing it must be confessed that those best qualified to assume the administration of our local politics require persuasion. The position is one which carries with it a responsibility that taxes any Councillor who endeavors to do his duty conscientiously. And it is probably because the reward is more in the nature of " kicks than ha'pence " that a I number fight shy of th« office. This year the Mayor also retires, and we understand from Mr Robbins that it is not his intention, to again contest the honor of chairmanship. We trust that ratepayers will exercise themselves in anticipation of the event, so that when nomination day comes round there will be no lack of candidates to whom the affairs of the borough may be safely entrusted.
