PATEA NOTES.

(Fiom Our Own Correspondent.)

Last evening a sensational bolt occurred in Patea, by which a horse belonging to Mr Grainger dislocated its neck. The horse and trap had been loft by Mrs Grainger outside Mr Adams' shop, and the hoise, becoming frightened, bolted up the street, swerved on to the sidewalk, and struck its head against the wall, breaking its neck. Fortunately, Mrs Grainger had just come out from the shop and removed her little child, which she had left in the trap. Our local artist. Miss Cameron, has just forwarded about thirty pictures, which aro to bo competed for in an art union held by the Pahiatua Rifles in aid of a new drill hull. The pictures include among others "Madame Chrysanthume," "Elaine," "Wellington Harbor by Twilight, '\ and other New Zealand scenps. The pictures reflect great credit on Miss Cameron's ability. The Patea towlers sent a rink to Waverley on Saturday to try and wrest, back the banner, but Waverley proved too strong for them. It is probable, that another toam will make, the attempt, next Saturday. (In the lawn tennis court on Saturday afti-rnnon .\nss Powdrell (owe 26) beat Miss Payne (roc. 7), 60—45, for the Ladies' First-class Handicap. Great interest was shown in the game throughout.

A number of Palea residents are to be called upon to answer in the S.M. Coun to a charge of riding bicycles on the footpath. This afternoon the funeral of Mrs Jas. Fowler took place. Mrs Fowler passed away on Thursday after a painful illness.

Harvesting in Patea is well to the for-, and the harvests are proving very satisfactory. Owing to the hot, dry weather milkers are loudly complaining of the falling-off in milk. The Kakaramea schoolboys beat Patea schoolboys on Saturday by five runs in a game of cricket.
