Some of the must remarkable scenes in the great Italian strike occurred in Venice, where for 48 hours the canals were without gondolas. Never before in the history of the city had there been such a triumph over authority. The trouble <beg&n by preconcerted arrangement on Sunday evening, when crowds paraded the streets, and, putting out the lights, plunged the city into complete .darkness. There was no pretence at opposition on the part of the police, and the mob had affairs completely their own way. Travellers could obtain no conveyance to the railway station, and had to remain over the day. A few people who have gondolas of their own attempted to approach the station, but were prevented. Travellers arriving in the city could find no conveyances, and had to trudge to their hotels on foot, and do the best they could with their luggage. The newspapers were prevented from publishing the banks "were closed, and several weddings and funerals had to be postponed owing to the general obstruction.
