THE WAVERLEY MEETING

The Waverlcy and Waitotara Rating Club's annual race meeting was held on King's Birthday. Ab usual it proved a very popular and enjoyable outing and attracted a large attendance, probably a record one. As the day advanced the weather was all that coulu be desired, although in the early port of the morning several very heavy showers fell. Good fields faced the barrier in most of the rates, «nd although the going was very heavy, owing to the late rains, the racing was most interesting. The starter, Mr C. H, Chavannes, got his fields away well, and as judge Mr M. F. Baird had some very close finishes to decide. In Mr A. E. Mathieson the club have a painstaking and obliging secretary, who, with his assistant, Mr E. P. Symes, was kept busily encaged during the day. The officials one ana all worked hard and carried out their respective duties in a prompt and businesslike manner. A capital luncheon was provided by Mr W. S. Dustin, of Wanganui, and Mr Quin, of Waverley, who was in charge of the publican's booth, ap peared to do good business. A large sum ( of money was put through the totaiisator by Messrs Naylor and Spriggens. Morris), 9.6, 1; Morelli, 9.6, 2; Forest, 9.2, 3. Also started : Romany King, 9.10, Laurce 9.2, Last Spec, 9.2. Durban went to the front at the back of the i course, and won comfortably by two lengths. Time 2.58. Dividends £2 9s and 15s 6d. Flying Handicap, 6 furlongs. — Present (G. *Gomer), 8.4, 1; Blessbok, 7.10, 2; Kangaroo, 7.3, 3. Also started : Land o* Cakes 7.12, Tambourtna 7.6, Present 7.5, Bagatelle 7.0, Malosa 7.0, Wild Duck 7.0. A splendid finish. Blessbok Jed into the straight, and looked like winning, but L«e Dean came with a great run when nearing the post., and won by a head. Time 1.21. Dividends £8 7s 6d and 16s 6d. > Morton Memorial Stakes, 1 mile. — Crim1 son Lake (J. Fryer), 9.7. 1 ; Delemere, 9.8, 2 ; Pardon, 7.1, 6. A great race home j ensued, Marinella winning by a neck, Opaeae four lengths away third. Time 2.19. Dividend £4 16s. I Prince of Walrs Handicap, 7 furlongs.— Cnringonn (Barlow), b.6, lj Delemere, 8.11, 2; Blessbok, 7.8, 3. Scratched: The Romany and Malosi. This was tho race of the day. After a great race Cairngorm won under the whip l>y a short neck a similar distance separating second and third horses. Dividends £4 8s and 18s. Tinift 1.33. Wilson Memorial Stakes, 4 furlongs; minimum weight Bst.— Bagatelle (irigger) 1; Iseult, 2; Firelight, 3. Scratched: Federation, King's Cap and Rangimoe. The field kept well together till entering the straight. Nearing the .post Bagatelle came with a fast tun and won by a neck. Time 52sec. Dividends £34 7s 6d and £2 16s 6d. Iseult and Opaeae were bracketed on the machine. Momohaki Stakes. 1 mile and a dlsisuiw. Romany King (Clareburt), 7.1, 1 ; Aureole, 7.10, and Maureen, 7.11, (dead heat), 2. Crimson Lake, 7.0 also started. Romany King led for the last half mile, and after an exciting race won by a neck. Dividend £7 17s 6a. No time was taken. Jackson Memorial, 5 furlongs. — Contingent (Neale), 1; Firelight, 2; Royal Flush, 3. After an exciting finish Contingent won by a head. Royal Flush close up. Dividends, £3 14s and £2 2s.
