DEATH OF THE VETERAN STATESMAN. [PRKSS ASSOCIATION.] (Received October 3, 1.2 a.m.) „ „,.„ LONDON, October 2. Sir William Vernon Harcourt died suddenly at Nuneham Park. [The deceased statesman, who was Mr Gladstone's lieutenant in the leadership of the Liberal party, had a brilliant career at Cambridge, and at the Bar. He was Home Secretary in the 1880-85 Government. As Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1894 he carried through the most remarkable Budget of recent years, equalising the death duties and the income tax. Ho retired from the leadership of the Liberal party in the Commons in 1896. Deceased was a witty and impressive orator, and had no superior as a parliamentary debater. He was a trenchant controversialist, a famous talker, and a magnificent political fighter. He was bora in 1827.]
