BLACKLEG.

Mr Tonks referred to. the Order-in-Council which had been made declaring this district quarantined on account of blackleg. No catLlo under 18 months could leave the district. This would be a big handicap on farmers in this district. The disease, he l»elieved, was neither infectious nor contagious, and was really not so serious as supposed. Mr Tonks thought that half the farmers had not seen blackleg, and would not know it w«re they to see it, He would move, That Mr Gilrutb be written to and asked to give an address on the subject, un.der the auspices of the Association and the Farmers' Union. Mr Duckworth, Secretary of the Farmers' Union, said he had already written to tho Department, asking that Mr Gilruth give an address Mr Duirs said there was not the slightest doubt that the disease was contagious. He bought diseased cattle that died, and «ome oMiis own then died. If a diseased animal died, however, the rest could be saved by being transferred to poorer pasture. Mr Tonks said it was impossible to get a permit for stock to leave the district even if they ware' inoculated and passed as sound by the Stock Inspector. The motion was carried. The meeting then rose.
