SANFORD'S AMERICAN PLATERS.

• Thert was a fair attendance at the Opera House on Wednesday night to witness the performance of "The Power of Gold," but by no means such a good house as the management deserved. The company is . new to New Zealand, but. judging from the performance under notice, it will rapidly achieve a colonial reputation. The play produced 'was- brimful of stirring incidents, plots and countor plots, and unexpected denouements. •){ the company it may be said that the combination does include one weak member. Lady Brandon, alias "Mary Clark," alias "Nancy Dorman," was a character capably sustained by Miss Laura Wall, whose fscial expression when hatching and carrying her devil' 3ll plans into execution was strongly supported by the intensity of her tigerish utterances.' The part was doubtless overdrawn, but it was not overacted. There tre two other villains in the piece, Hadgi (Mr Sanford) and Maik Farley "(Mr George Kunkel), and both acted capably. The part of Paul Judson was well played by Mr A. C. Henderson, and as his wife Miss Maude Barber acted with grace and considerable effect. "There was nothing cheap aho':t/ Nprah Donelly," a character which in the bands of Miss Adelaide Boothby amusjJ and won the entire sympathy of the audi ence. The humorous element was supplied by Samuel Smudge (Mr G. Wrav), ivho had fond hopes of becoming a "Hem Dee, but the only titles for which his NI.D. ever formed an abbieviation wer^ Moat Dealer and Much Diossed. The nmor parts were in^ood hands. The stage scenery and dressing weie gorgeous, aid the performance 1 -'hroughout was yarded with loud applause. It may safe- i ybe piedicted that -I Mr Sanford's com ! >any should pay a return visit that they < nil be welcomed by a bumper house. ]
