HHE COSTLEY HOME.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 7. The letter sent to the Premier by the Chairman of the • ChaiitabjOs Aid BoarJ, in repiy to the Premier's letter forwarded to the Board along with lithe report of the Royal Commission oiji;' the management of the Costley Home,/ states in view of the Government's psrc&ptbry demand the Board now left justified m adding to the equipment of thejHome and in strengthening the staff. The Government must, however; assume the responsibility of the increased levy which such additional expenditure will eitail upon the local bodies. The Board denies the pre* B9nc». of vermin in the institution beyond that introduced by new 'inmates. The Board also says that the allegation of dirt smd diwarineas Im«s magnified, if not grossly exaggerated. The] report admits that the present staff has} been seriously handicapped by its limited number and by the inadequate equipment fof the Home', and consequently must Favi been working under difficulties. Therefore the Boat-d considers that it would be; harsh to dismiss any at its tried employees. In the meantime the local bodies, f by practically jre-elccting all the old Boa^d wno sought ne-election, have evidently aot drawn the same conclusions from tnejevidence that lt}Q Commissioners did. It -Is the opinion of the majority' of the contributing bodies jhat inmates of the Costl«y Home are now, and have been, enjojung blessings and comforts denied to a gVeat many of those who contribute to its support, and that to. make the instituion too.attracive of to provide anything like luxury there "would be calculated to creaie a premium' ; yq,/ improvidence, ' intemperance, and
