THE LATE HON. W. C. WALKER.

The announcement of the death of the Hon. W. C. Walker, C.M.G., ' will be' received with regret by a , large circle of political and personal friends. Mr Walker entered the I House of Representatives for a Canterbury constituency, we think, ' about the year 1884, as a supporter of the half conservative half radical I Stout* Vogel combination, the vain plank in whose platform -was giving the colony " another chance " by 1 constructing such works as the Midland railway. When that Go- ! vernment fell, Mr Walker became associated with the radical patty, though probably his sympathies did not run very strongly with them, and the connection continued. Ultimately he became a member of the Seddon Government, representing them in the Legislative Council, and holding various portfolios, the principal of which was that of Education. This position he resigned last year, owing to ill health, and he was then elected Speaker of the Council. He was not a very strenuous politician, but as a welleducated genial man enjoyed a good , deal of popularity, and was of conj siderable service to the party he 1 had associated himself with.
