HAWERA INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION.

COMMITTEE MEETING. 1

The weekly meeting ol the Executive Committee of the Haweta Industrial Exhibition was held in tHe Council Chambers on Tuesday evening The President, Mr B. C. Bobbins, was in the chair, and about fifteen other gentlemen were present. .. . 1 Correspondence. ■ Letters were read, .' From several firms regarding space which were dealt with.' From the principal, „K«w Plymouth High School, saying that arrangements would be made, if possible, for an exhibit to be made by the school. From the Railway Department saying that upon six days excursion trains would be run.— Mr Nolan said the excursions should commence on the 2nd of February. It. was resolved to make a further request that the excursions be extended durwg the continuance of the Exhibition. From Shacklock and Co., agreeing to give a stove for the , cookery division, providing no other s,tove was given.— As another stove had been promised, it was decided to refer the matter to the local , agent. From S. Kingdon, Masterton, saying that no class was arranged for plumbing, and asking of what' advantage would it be .0 exhibit. — It Wflfs resolved to add a cl-iss for plumbing to the schedule. I v Reports. ■ ' The Motor dar Race Committee reported that five persons had expressed their willingness to compete, but unless seven competitors would* enter the committee did not think it advisable to have the race. — The matter was held over until it was found' whether the required number of competitors could be induced to take part. The Guarantee Committee reportai that several signatures had been added to the bank guarantee. A section of the Banquet Committee reported that 42 tickets for the banquet had been sold. x

The Musical Committee reported that it had been found it' would be too costly to import, music from Wellington. The committee thought if/would be rtScessajy to have music throughout the afternoon and evening, and music of a class tliat could be moved about. To get music locally it would. 'cost £20 or £25. — Mr Whittaker asked whether Ideal amateurs would not volunteer to play, as otherwise ' the cost would be top much. He suggested that the Musical Committee arrange for a quartette on one afternoon, a band "the/next, and so on. Mr Dixon agreed that Volunteers should be invited to contribute selections. On the motion of Mr Wilson, the committee's report that music was recessary was adopted, and • the ' matter of definitely arranging was held over until the cAst be ascertained. The Jiighting Committee reported that tenders' had been received from two firms for ligliting the parts of the buildings and grounds not . already provided for. Messrs Steuart and Ferin tendered to supply 160 16 c.p. electric glow lamps for the stftft of £95," the Exhibition Committee to supply the necessary power and attendants, and also to provide a counter shaft with' fly wheels, the tenderers' responsibility'to cease at the dynamo. The ilawera Gas Co. tendered to supply, erect, maintain and remove all the necessaryburners, lamps, ''pipes, labour, gas, etc., for supplying ,8000 c.p. for ten nights of four hours- each for the sum of £57, or to supply, erect, maintain, and remove all the hecessary burners," lamps, pipes, labour, gas, etc., for 1000 c.p. at 15s per night of four hours. The cost to the Exhiuition j. Committee on a basis of ten nights of four hours each would be as follows: — 2500 qandle power (electric £115 15s ; 2500 candle power (gas), £18 15s j "8000 candle power (gas), £57. Thsy therefore recommended that tho Hawera Gas Co.'s tender for 8000 c.p. at £57 be accepted,.— -Mr Bates thought the tender was very reasonable. < Mr vVhittaker moved that the recommendation be adopted. Carried. The Art Committee reported that everyGiiing was progressing, satisfactorily, but the difficulty now was to get a judge. j "Tlie Schedule Committee reported upon the number of tickets required, and with respect to advertising and catalogues. Tne Amusement Committee reported giving dates upon which the 1 diiferent competitive events would take place. The report also dealt with the proposed Punch and Judy show, merry-go-round, weighing machine, water carnivals, and several side shows.— The report, was discussed at length and adopted. ' ' General.

The matter of engaging the Theatre Koyal was discussed, and it 1 was resolved to engage the hall at JBI per day. J. Brunette asked the committee to give him the sole right of striking a commemoration medal to be sold at the Exr hibition. Tne Guarantee Committee were ap pointed to canvass the townspeople to take up space, Uv Holm moved that Air Major, M.H.R., ask the Postmaster-General tc give the executive permission to frank letters and telegrams for one month. It was resolved to ask the Superintend enfc of Police to appoint another police man for night work during the Inhibition.

Mv Nolan moved, That the Chairman write to the various Chambers of Commerce throughout the colony to appoint delegates to visit Hawera on February 9 to discuss means for the proper reprasen tafcion of the colony afc the "New Colindies ' Exhibition" in 1905.— Carried. A class for knitting machines wap added to the schedule on the motion of Mr Dixon.

It was resolved to extend the time of entry m the domestic division to a date to be announced later. It T\as decided to make arrangements tor the accommodation of visitors to the Exhibition, and have a register prepared showing in what houses such" could be secured. The Education Committee reported, recommending that Monday and Tuesday be set aside for children, and that th« chairmen and head masters of the various schools be apprised accordingly. — The report was adopted. . •
