HA WERA CALED ONIAN SPORTS.

THE FOURTEENTH ANNUAL GATHERING. President: Mr M. F. Baird. Vice^Presi- j dents: Messrs ;T. Nicholas and W. A. I Parkinson. Treasurer : Mr B. C. Rob' bins. Handieipper : Mr R. H. Kiyell. . Starter: Mr*W. J. McNiven. , .Timekeeper: Mr R. W. Sargent. It must always be a pleasure' to notice the efforts of an institution which 'has for its object the promotion of education in some form op other. The Hawerij. (3?iledonian Society is just such an institution/ and it is with* the very greatest satisfaction that welfare again this year able to place 'on record a most successful meeting me Society has now been in existence for something like fourteen years, an& after eaoh. New .Year's Day it has been in a better position. For a great many years rain greatly interfered with the work of the directors, but latterly there has been a decided improvement in this respect. Last year it only rained on part of the day, and this time the bad weather which threatened in the mornins cleared up nicely as the day advanced. As might have been expected there was a large crowdjf but there would undoubtedly have been a "great many more people from the country lad the weather not* been so unfavourable right up to sports time. Regarding the sports it may be said that, althofgh the Secretary had all arrangements m most excellent, order, there was a lack of that desirable "swing"' about them, due apparently to the want of f a I leader on the ground. There were any number present who were quite willing to assist, and did, but what was wanted was I a. man who would take charge with a committee under him to do the -work. Nevertheless it cannot be said that the meeting was not highly successful. The fields, ?xcep& in the Maiden, were large. ! and the competition was keen, while the (class of contestants present was much above the average. Notably in the mile and the 100 yards the times registered were very good. Mr R. H. Kiveil had his men nicely placed, and, in consequence, there, were a great many excellent finishes Sjn the bicycle events the scratrh men were unable to make up. the distanre, arid were out of the running every time. Of course from the- Scotchman's point of view the principal part of the programme was th4t devoted to music, and many hearts must have yearned for a sight of the old /country at the sound of the pipes yesterday. There were more pipers pre--sent thjan on former occasions, and the music fras keenly appreciated. In the dances very good form was shown, and great interest was taken in the event <or children under sixteen. Miss Vida Loder was again present, and showed that., she had not forgotten the art, but the judges only gave her second place to Miss E. Toddfvof Mangatoki, who kept beautiful tram and was exceptionally neat and graceful Two little girls from Wanganui Miss ; Morgan and Miss Campbell, also competed, and were accorded much applaasfc on finishing their dances. ' The judges complimented them most higb.lv. remarking that although they, had met mor^' experienced performers £hey hail shown careful training, and would be hard to beat in a couple of years. A detachment of the Wanganui Highland Rifies was present under Sergeant Watson. Thejr gay uniforms were much admired, during the day. A great day was spent by „the numerous children present; !\!r J. E. Wilson again had charge of, the amusements, and the toys he produced for prizes delighted even those who failed to win oiw of the 'very many races that were arranged during the day.. Tne Hawe*-a Borough- Band was present under Bandmaster McConnel, and during the day play ad several .-.elections. A, number - t H yisftors from Wanganui remarked on the improvement the band had made since last New Year's Day. The only trouble was with a man named Wilson, who had run at the Feilding sports, and was therefore disqualified. Tha publican's booth was run by Mr Cockerton, of the Commercial Hotel, Norrnanby, and apparently excellent business was done. , In marquees specially erected a- firskclass luncheon and afternoon tea was put on oy Mr J. P. Keen, of the Egmont Bakery.

Amongst the officials, although all wen hard at worjk, none did so much as Mi W. J. McNzven, who most ably filled hi; position as starter. Mr A. G. Brett, ai usual, had the preparations in first-clasi order, and was most obliging and cowr teous during the day. Mr, if. Morrissei as his assistant was well up to the marl ,in the work, and rendered valuable aid Mr Bobbins, the Treasurer, was the mos interesting official from the winners' pom of view, and in order to be at his pqs was required to keep in the pavilion al most the whole day. Only four came for , ward for the Maiden, but a good race re suited, the winner having very little t< spare. A 220 yards race for boys unde fourteen followed, and Graham had th race from the commencement. Wit! about 30 yards start the others' didn' touch, him at all. The first big even drew a large field, three heats being mi before the final of the 100 yards could b proceeded with. All through these race the competitors kept well together, th winners only appearing when within few feet of the tape. In the final ther I was not a yard between the first and th last men, and the winner merely go home by a touch. The cyclists appearei for the first time' in the Maiden, a handi cap of one mile. The field .kept well tc gather for the first two rounds, but there after the first and second iIH went awa; and raced out a good finish, uhe different between the two bging very small. Th bagpipe music and the dancing were cci tainly the features of the gathering. Witi 'regard to the music the judge remark* that it was very good, but he though that the pibrochs and marches should i; future be divided, and two prizes offered The piper who was best in marches wa not trest in pibrochs, ' and it wds ver hard to allot a prize. There was onl ; one competitor for the heavy weigh wrestling, and be had his entrance mon* returned. There ware four entries for eh light-weight, but the fqrm wps very pooi Only one man had any idea of the art The 440 yards was covered in good; time the bace was hard throughout, am though he sprinted well at the c ,end Cathr was unable to reach the leacjyttMKkrel made the pace the whole waj^^^^Hta of the one-mile bicycle even^^^^^^Ka race resulted, Lowe ben&r^fl^^^^H^cJ tiie winner by about h£| v *w!SHPk p Sheehan was remarkably /Accesaful In th high jump.
