Hayes (Mr McCarthy, of Mr Caplen's office}. Defendant had obtained goods, and presented a valueless cheque. An order for tho amount was made, to be paid forthwith, in default seven days' imprisonment. JUDGMENT BY CONSENT. T. Hagginaon v. G; Hayes (Mr McCarthy, of Mr Caplen's office).— Claim £5 Is 6d, costs 27s 6d. . DRIVING LOOSE HORSES.

James Henry was* charged with driving, horses through : the town in contravention-, of the bye-laws. Sergeant Bernard prosecuted. Constable Clarke proved service of the summons. He saw accused diive eight young horses in Princes Street without any halters or leading strings. Alexander Brett, Town Clerk of Hawera, said that he did not give accused permission to drive horses in the street. ' .

LICENSING CASE. Thomas Rowan, licejneee of .the Normanby Hotel, was charged on the information of Constable Hughes with supplying Ikpior to Maori women. A further case against Patrick Rowan was taken at the same time.

Me Welsh appeared for both defendants. The first, pleaded not guilty, and the second guilty. Sergeant Bernard said that Thomas Rtowan had '.a booth away from tho hotel, and Patrick Bovron was left in charge oi the hotel. Mr Welsh . explained that Thpmas Kow-ajn had given instructions not to soil liqtuor to Maori women> and that Patrick hod given it, not' knowing the law. • He submitted that it was a case of tedhnical law, and argued that Thomas Rowan was afbsoliutely irresponsible for the gift. • ■His argjument was upheld, anfd the case against Thomas Rowan was dis-. missed.' In the case of Patrick Rowan His Worship said he could not impose merely a nominal fine,' as defendant should have known the law. Defendant was ■ fined- £2 and costs 29s 6d. OLD AGE PENSION CANCELLED.

Binga Tv was charged with not carrying oiit the provisions of tihe Old Age Pensions' Act while in receipt of a pension, in that* he had been drunk and was not a respectable person.
