WEST COAST TRADE.

At a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday a letter was received from a Patea correspondent urging that a better shipping service should bo obtained along tho West Coast.

Mr A. H. Nathan said that tho trouble was that there was no back freight obtainable from Patea. All their goods were sent to Wellington. Mr Wiseman said Wanganui would supply freight. Mr Nathan said the same thing applied to Wanganui. They could not expect a shipping company to run a service at a loss.

Mr Wiseman : But you are losing trade all the time.

Mr Nathan : If the trade is done at a loss of perhaps £20 a week it is better to lose it.

Mr Whitney said there was already a good trade existing with Kawhia.

Mr Wiseman : And also with Wanganui.

Mr Nathan : Why do not the merchants subsidise a service ?

Mr Whitney thought it would pay to subsidise a service for Kawhia.

Mr Clarke : There is only one cure — that is the Manukau Canal.

The Chairman}. That's no cure. You won't have the Manukau Canal for 20 years.

It was decided to submit the letter to the Northern Steamship Company for their consideration. — Star.
