MANGATOKI.
(From a Correspondent.) A ■ meeting of those interested in athletic sports was hold in the Public Hall on ' January Bth, upwards of' fifty being present. ■ Mr Cooper was voted to the chair, and Mr Maxwell appointed secretary pro tern. Besolved, That an athletic club, to be called the Mangatolri Athletic Club, be formed. The election of officers' and committee was next dealt with. Mr C. E. McCracken, junr. ; secretary 1 , "Mr John P. Marx ; treasurer, Mr G. Gibson. Mr Bobt. Linn kindly placed paddock at corner of - Eltham ' and Hastings*' roads at the service of the Club, both for practice,' and for holding the first meeting, Mr Linn's offer being' accepted with applause. • : Besolved, That the first meeting be held last Thursday in March, in the meantime the necessary arrangements for providing funds, fixing 'up the rules, etc., be proceeded s with.'
Besolved, That the annual member's subscription' be, -ss, -such 'sub? soription to admit ' member and lady to sports and luncheon., ? At the close of the meeting, enrolment of members was proceeded with, resulting in 48 being enrolled. 'A committee meeting to deal 'with programme and set .up tho necessary I sub-committees, v etc., was fixed for Monday, 12th inst. Great interest, is being* taken in the movement, and, given a fine day, it should prove a pleasant day out both for the local residents and visitors. The personnel of the. Committee will secure the confidence ,of both public and competitors, the greater number of the.^ Committee being- old .sprinters, and well posted up in athletics, the' want .of a Wragge on the Committee beingr, the only fly in the ointmenti However, this is more than made vp 5*5 * by- 'having- our new member, Mr Major, . patron. Mr Major has long, beetf noted for his- practical enthusiasm in sporting matters, rightly holding the view that athletic sports in moderation are 1 essential to the building* up and maintenance of our nation.
