MONDAY, DECEMBER 15. THE EXPORTER AND THE MARKET.

Delivered e\ery (jvomni? l.y 0 o'clock in li-iworn,

Manaia, 't o-'tKunliy, Ok liawa, Elttuiiv, Alangntoki, Kuiion^a, Awatuna, Opu'riko, Otakoho, Munutnln, ALmu, Huriiyrillr, Patea, and Warerl. y.

From a table lately published by the Deputy Registrar General, and from the Official Year Book, we gither figures which emphasise our firmer knowledge, that for exports Ntw Znalsmd must look almost entirely to the faimr-r and gn.zi-r whilst the manufucturer is, ccloniill.y speaking, •' i>os in it." The total output of, our manufactories in 1900 whs of the value of £17,141,149, whilst the Year Book informs us that the export; of manufactures iv tho same year was worth £549,342, a very small proportion of the output, an 3 which include phortu'um (hemp) to tho valm of £332,182. Of the products of the /arm, in the tame .year, besides providing foods' uffs for the colony, tbe producer exported of animuls and produce, and ngi-iouhuriil products, exports to the value of £10,017,423. We exported also considerable products of the mine, which statistic 'aus of Britwia are wont to class as an export cf capital, and not of industry. It is evident, thertfure, that in applying tur energies to the weakest line of resistance, we shall find it to our advantage to continue to produce the priina-y products of the lan.?. A late London Times, in treating of ogijoultnral imports, shows us tho extent of our matket there, and it is r.oliccable that in the supply of beef New Zealand comes third, that she forwards fully onehalf of the dead mutton, and is net even mentioned as a considerable supplier of dairy produce. We apparently yet make no mark. •• The impel* s of ea'.tla into the United Kingdom for tho fiist eight months of tho year number 272,664 head, or 57,726 fewer than in the cotresponding period of last year. Ojr imports of fresh beef, to the extent of 2,574,006cwt, fall 440,2210wt short, of thoro over the corresponding period of 1901. Of this quantity, 1,600, 100cwt have come fiom 'the United Suites, bub our r.cipts from that source are 656, 808c wt1e53. On t l ie other band, the consignrnerns • from Argentina have risen from 466,396 cwt. to 621,556 cwt. New Z- aland has sent 191,736 cwt., and ranks third amongst our sources of supply. The current total oi mutton, 2,673,938 cwt., is 115,111 cwt. in excess of that of a year ogo. New Zealand alone has contributed 1,309,624 cwt., or about a half cf the total supply. The Argentine ranks nest for 936,633 cwt., or 119,542 cwt. in excess of the corresponding total for 1901. Oar imports of bacon and hams coivinuo to thow a moderate decline. Of the former at tide , tilte eight months total of 3.498,150 cwt. falls 837,255 cwt. below the corresponding import of las; year. About twothirds of the whole have come from the United States, Dennmik ranking second, and Canada third among our sources of supply. The total imports of dead meat of all kind?, including pork, dead rabbits, salt meat, and meat otherwise preserved, our eight months' imports, amounting to 11,729,957cwt, fall 880,4870wt short of those last year. Their value amounts to £26,320,630. Nothing seems capable ol checking the expansion of the imports of butter, which ore 152,161cwt in excess of these of last year. Denmark ranks easily first amongst our sources of supply, with a total of 1,177,748c\vt, Russia, which occupies second place, falling fAr behind with a coutribution or 372,27 1e5vt. Our eight months' bill for imported butter reaches the substantial figure of £14,088,966." New Zealand's total export of butter for the twelve months ending 81st March last was of the value of £882,406. We can increase factories and exports many times before we can surfeit the British public with butter, and there aro immense openings for our enterprise in other kinds of broadstuffs. But in organisation in the British markets we are sadly behind the Argentfne.
