HAWERA TENNIS CLUB.

The übovo club oponod ittt season at tho now courtH on .Saturday afternoon, h/k! was fortunate in the woathor boing lino. There a very largo attendance, of which ladiee* formed tho greater number. Thtf courts oro well situated adjoining the Howling Club's green, and for a first season play well. Two courts are ava'ilablo for play ; tho third, it is expected, will bo reutty in a month's tirao. Owing to the absence of Mr Jan. Livingston,,, tho club's j-rcsidont, Mr C. E. Major, one of tho club's vico-prosidontß, delivered a short address, declaring the now courts formally oponod. Mr Major, among other matters, v stated that when the history of tonnis in Hawera came to bo written it would bo discovered that its career had been a choqtiered one. Ho instanced some of the ups and downs it had undorgone, and ascribed iho olymYb impecunious condition to tho dearth of men members, and said for tho practical enthusiasm of ' the secretary, Mr if. Tur.ton, and 0110 or two others, thorc would bo n<* club and no tennis ground., Ho referred to tho palmy days of tennis in H'awora, and of tho many onjoyablo ' matches played between thq^, variout) towns throughout tho province, in»' which Hawora had well hold its own. 1 [Waverloy, in his opinion, was tho champion clvb v along tho coast, being 1 Rtrong 1 in men and women players. Speaking aa ono who had taken part in almost evil outdoor games, ho way quito cortain that for health giving, recroation and continuous enjoyment tennia stood first. Tho speaker urged that "a. new era having been entered upon, oach and all should strive (ho Itnow tho ladies would) to placo tho club in a strong financial position in , order that >tho many improvements so < urgently required might be carriod out.
