SYDNEY, December 13.
At a meeting of the Marine Board, a letter was received fi orn the Secretary of the New Zealand Marine Department, asking whether cei'tain evidence given at the Elingauiite enqui'y, to the effect that Captain Deary, the Board's surveyor, allowed the steamer to leave port without making sure her boats were provided with compasses, was true. Captain Deary states that although his notebook showed no detailed account of the last inspection, he is perfectly certain each of the four lifeboats contained the articles insisted on by tbe regulation?, and that if that had not been so he would never have given tbe necessary certificate.
