MANGATOKI.

(FROM AN OCCASIONAL CORRESPONDENT.) The second sohool concert this winter, held on Friday last, was a success in every way. With the best of music and singing, an appreciative audience, and the weather all that could be desired, it did not require the philosophy of a Mark Taple.y to be jolly. The first pare of the Goncert opened with an orchestral selection by the Misses White (Te Boti), violin, piano, and 'cello, followed by vocal selections : " The Admiral," Mr Buchanan; "The Scotch Brigade," Miss Simpson ; song ■ and chorus, " Sweet Elsie of the Glen," by Messrs J. Wolfe, Clapharu, and Eccleston ; Mr Ford's Irish jig created intense merriment among the juveniles ; " The Flag That Bules the World," Miss Palmer ; " The British Navy," Mr Cooper ; " In the Old, Old Way," Mrs Wilson ; "Just as the Sun Went Down," Mr Bennock ; "If the Waters Could Speak as they Flow," Mr Eccleston ; a comic Hong by Mr Preece fully upheld the latter's already good reputation. During the interval the Chairman thanked the ladies and gentlemen who were so kindly giving then* assistance, and said that the School Committee having decided on certain improvements on the school ground in the form of ornamental shelter, together with the necessary fencing, erection of swings, flagstaff, and improvement of playground, oonBidered a series of concerts and socials the most likely means to provide the necessary funds. The next, and probably h'nal, meeting of the series would be held four weeks hence, September 12tb, in the form of a social, sapper, and dance, when, he trusted, the public would repeat the kindly interest and practical support which had hitherto been accorded the Sohool Committee in every undertaking for the benefit; of the sohool, The Misses White opened the second part with a moßt enjoyable orchestral selection, followed' by a well- executed concertina libretto by Mr H. J. Wolfe. Mr Ford gave a comio rendition of "Love Among the Roses," succeeded by the following vocal selections : " The Silver Khine," Miss White; "Holy Friar," Mr Buchanan ; " Irene, Good Night," Miss Simpson; "The Better Land," Mr Olapham ; " Asleep on the Deep," Mr A. Baker. The National Anthem brought a pleasant evening to a olose. The accompaniments being

played| by Mrs Horneman renders any comment on Bume superfluous. Mrs Horneman has for yeara held tbe premier position in our district as far as music is concerned, and the early departure of heraelf and family will be a great loss, especially to our young people. Mesdames Solley, Buchanan, and Linn —ihe ladies whose catering for the performers, and kindly attention to comforts of same, deserve more tban passing notice ; they certainly have a first claim on the gratitude of all interested and benefited by school improvements. And who is not benefited that resides within the radius of the school's attendance ? The present of the school makes tbe future of the district, and in the hurry and struggle of life few of us give school matters a fraction of the thought the gravity of the subject warrants.
