EDUCATION BOARDS' CONFERENCE.

Wellington, August 18. The Conference resolved that a substantial increase should bo made in tbo building grant, and that the capitation grant should. bo increased by 3s 6d; that primary and secondary education should be brought under the control of Education Boards; that a grant for manual and technical instruction should be made to Boards direct; that the Conference views with disfavour the multiplication! of petty text books ; that provision should be made for teaching sewing in all schools ; that the Conference strongly disapproves the centralisation of the inspectorates; that inspectors should be granted free pusses on railways ; .that inspectors should meet teachers in conference at regular intervals; that suitable per. manent provision be made for payment of relieving teachers ; that there Is need for adequate training of teachers ; that Education Boards should be eleoted by a wider constituency than at present (carried by 6to 4) ; that this Conference ttusts greater promptitude will be shown by the Department in communications with Board?, and also deprecates the tendency of the oentral office to enoroaoh on the powers and functions of Boards.
Wellington, August 20. The Education Conference resolved that in order to secure uniformity in the appointment of teachers, the Boards be recommended to forward the names of all applicants to the School Committee, with testimonials, and that one name be selected, with an intimation that the Board proposes to appoint this teacher, provided the Committee does cod giva valid reasons to the contrary. It was decided to wait on the Government, and lay the decisions before the Ministers The Conference then adjourned.
