BOER GENERALS IN ENGLAND.

THEIR AUDIENCE WITH THE

KING.

THEY ARE DELIGHTED WITH

HIS MAJESTY.

WHEN THE GENERALS AND LEYDS MEET.

Received August 18, 10.42 p.m. London, August 18. Laßt evening the King drove through Cowes.

His Majesty had a - very cordial fifteen minutes' audience with the Boer Generals, and referred to the gallant manner in wbioh they fought and tbe consideration and kindness wherewith they had treated the British. He ooboluded with warm wishes for their future.

The Generals feelingly acknowledged the King's gracious sentiments. They afterwards lunched with Lord Kitchener.

They were cheered during the journey from Southampton to London. The visitors informed, newspaper representatives that they .were delighted and much struck with the King's reception of them. Hig -Majesty was on the deck of the Royal yacht. He went towards the gangway on their arrival, and after being introduced shook hands with eaoh. Later, he introduced them to the Queen, Princess Victoria, and Prince Arthur. Received August 19, O 17 a.m. London, August 18.

The Boer Generals during the voyage did not receive an official invitation to the naval review.

The Berlin newspaper the National Zeitung predicts a stormy interview between the Generals and Dr. Leyds. The latter will be asked to disgorge, and he will probably accuse the Generals of compounding with the enemy, just as Krugerites used .Lucas Meyer's visit to Mr Chamberlain as a weapon against him ; but the Generals are unwilling to listen to those played-out methods. They will go forward in accordance with their own judgment of what is best in pursuance of the mission of raising money to assist their distressed countrymen. Received August 19, 0.47 a.m. London, August 18.

Mr Fischer Beemed to be the bearer of some important communication. At any rate, when Captain Market, Lord Kitchener's aide-de-camp, invited the Boer Generals to meet Lord Boberts, little enthusiasm was shown. They explained aboard the Nigeria that urgent family reasons called them to London, wishing to meet their relatives ; but they forthwith arranged to return on Sunday to see the King. After the audience they were conducted, at the King's request, through the lines of warships.

The Generals' absence from the review has elated pro-Boers in Paris ; but some newspapers in France, Germany, and Belgium admit that the Generals are unlikely to cast in their lot with Mr Kcuger and Dr Leyda, and reasonably interpret their absenoe, one organ describing it a3 a mark of respect to Meyer. The papers consider the reception given the Generals, and the sincere expression of admiration by the King and people alike in Welcoming them as subjects of the Crown, most generous. The Times says that whilo it is right to show respect to a brave enemy, and reasonable to accept assurances of fidelity, the exuberance of emotion shown by the London crowds is much in excess of what is appropriate, and unworthy of the spirit in which the struggle was conducted by both sides.
