LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

The Council met at 2.30 p.m.
Hon. G. Jones moved, That the Government, in view of the alarming reports of the Inspector of Police and the City Engineer of Wellington as to thb serious unsatisfactory condition of a large number of hotels in Wellington, should take steps to secure sucb reforms as may be necessary in connection with these undesirable and illegal drinking saloons to bring about a removal of the menace to public safety, health, and comfort described in the reports. After quoting from reports, he contended the law had baen seriously infringed under circumstances which he considered made it the duty of the Inspector to object go the grauting of licenses to the houses concerned.
Hon. R. H. J. Reeves thought tho best course to pursue was to grant free trade in licenses. He moved an amendment that all words after " necessary " be b truck out of the motion.
After further debate, the motion, amended as suggested by Hon. Reeves, was agreed to on the voices.
The Statutes Repeal Bill was read a third time and passed.
The Aid to Public Works and Land Settlement Bill was read a third time and passed. The Council rose at 4.10 p.m.
