LAND SALE.

SPIRITED BIDDING AND EXCELLENT PRICES. - -I;

Quite surprising was the interest taken in the sale of land held by Mr W. Cowern on Thursday, and the prices secured must be taken as striking evidence of the present prosperity of the district and tbe confidence in its future. The sections offered belonged to the estate of the late Mr Hugh McCarty, of Patea, and are situated at Whakamara, about two and a half miles from the Mokoia railway station. There are no buildings on any of the sections, which are each 50 acres in extent, and separately fenced. The land is excellent for dairying, and the present hopeful outlook of the dairying industry evidently made prospective buyers eager. The bidding for tbe first allotment offered started at £l'd, and continued brisk until £17 was reached, when it was knocked down to Mr D. Barry, of Hawera, There was no waiting on the part of bidders, who "rose" each other by ten shillings, a state of things tbat comes as a pleaeaat surprise to an auctioneer in these days, when, usually, the greatest eloquence is required to draw bids of half ihat amount. The second lot went up to £17 10s, Mr Duirs catching the auctioneer's eye, aud that gentleman also got the third and last, at £14 17s 6d. Three sections in Kakaramea township were also disposed of The buyers and prices are as under : Section 303, Whakamara —M. D.

Barry, Hawera, £17 an acre. Section 304, Whakamara —Mr W.

Duirs, £17 10s per acre, Section 317, Whakamara —Mr W.

Duirn, £14 17s 6d per acre. Kakaramea sections — M. J. McCarty purchased one, and Mr J. D. Mitchell (Manaia) two, all at £3 each. The sections are quarteracres.
