KAPONGA.

* LITERARY AND SOCIAL CLUB. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) A social evening of the Club was held on Tuesday, 25th inst. Mr F. Oliver presided. Mr Holdaway, by letter, notified his resignation as member of the committee. The secretary was instructed to write thanking him for his services. Mr E. Cole was elected to fill the vacancy, and Mr Betfcs to act as chairman for next fortnightly morning. It was intimated that the President, Mr F. W. Wilkie, had donated means for the purchase of two sets for ping pong. For the ping pong tournament, 28 competitors entered, the handicappers being Miss Young and Mr J. Mackie. After exciting play, which lasted about two and a half hours, the final heat between Mrs J. 'H. Frethey and Mr E. Cole was watched with interest, the competitors playing brilliantly, victory at length being declared in favor of Mr Cole by three points. The trophy, a silver-mounted purse, was handed to the winner by Mr Robertson, the donor. During the evening other games were indulged in by noncompetitors in the tournament, and several songs enlivened the proceedings, with supper provided by Mesdarnes Frethey, Robertson, and Walker. Votes of thanks to the chair and Ladies' Committee concluded a most enjoyable evening.
