A CONSTABLE SERIOUSLY INJURED.

Wellington, March 81. Constable Irwin, who served in the Second Contingent in South Africa, and joined the police on his return, was seriously injured on Saturday night, and is in the hospital in a serious condition. He had arrested John Duffy on a charge of disorderly conduct, and conveyed him to the station in a hansom. On arrival here, Irwin ran into the station, crying "I'm done," and then fell on the floor, bleeding. Irwin states that Duffy became violent in the cab, beat him severely, kicked him on the left side and in the abdomen, and forced his bead through the window. Irwin's friends reside at Hawera'. [Irwin's father and mother are residents of Patea.]
