FEDERAL TARIFF.
Melbourne, March 27. The Tariff Committee struck out undressed ash, oak, hickory, and walnut from exemption. On the item " New Zealand pine, undressed, sizes twelve by six inches, or its equivalent or over," Mr Manifold moved to strike out all the words after "undressed." He urged that all the pine used for butter boxes should be free. The proposal was strongly opposed in the interests of local industry. On the Bugpestion of the Right Hon. C. C. Kingston, the item passed as it stood, on the understanding that it will be recommitted, and fully discussed. A duty of 3d per gross on empty match boxes was passed.
