METHODIST CONFERENCE. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

Dunbdin, February 26. The Methodist Conference opened thia evening, the Eev. 0. H. Garland, the president, being in the chair. After service, the retiring president delivered his address, dealing fully with the expansion of the Methodist Church throughout the world, and. referring specially to Australasia. He spoke generally on the subject of ' Church union ; any proposals, in that direction would be sympathetically received by Methodists. He spoke hopefully of the religious outlook in the colony. The President was thanked for his address, and the elections were then proceeded with. The Rev. D. J. Murray, Thames, was elected secretary, the assisting secretaries being T Fee and C. H. Laws ; journal secretary, E. W. Grigg; corresponding secretary, G. Ward; precentor, A. Mitchell. The second reading of stations will be taken on Tuesday. Mr Ogilvie, Borontjh Foreman, reports that Union street will be closed for traffic for the nest few days, while grading and repairing are being oarried on. A curiosity was shown us this morning in the shape of a dock root, which on being measured proved to be no less than 15ft in lenglb. Mr Dabinett, of the Telegraph Department, discovered it on the side of a well at the back of the Post Office. Mr G. H. Gibson, of the Hawera Hotel Ptablea, has taken over the Empire Hotel stables, and will ran the two to the Batisfaotion of the public, we feel sure. The new stables are very commodious and up-to-date.
