Received February 26, 10.12 a.m. Sydney, February 26. Mr O'Sullivan, Minister for Works, in a scathing reply to Father Bunbury, said that for the past forty years the movement of tbe world was towards unification of the races. Such a movement was now going on in Europe, but if we were dominated by such parochial ideas as those formulated by Father Bunbury the AngloCeltic race would lose its place among the nations. It had been his endeavour to impress this on his countrymen — English, Scotch, Irish, and Welsh. The mighty powers of Europe were gradually closing round our shores, and some day there would be a mighty fight for supremacy. What could Australia do single-handed ? What was the good of talking about a republic, when their serious duty was to strive to perfect a con solidation of tbe race from which they had sprung ? He had been faithful to bis religion, but would not tolerate bigotry and sectarianism from anyone. Father Bunbury was clever, no doubt, in the abstract, but would be absolutely frail in practice, and this empire was to be built up by men who could do practical work.
