' South match, has intimated to the New Zealand Cricket Association that Downes, Fisher, and Austin will be uuub'e to play in Wellington at Easter. RECHABITE FRIENDLY SOCIETY. ♦ A special meeting of the Pride of Egmont Tent of the Independent Order of Reohabites was held at the Weeleyan Church on Monday evening, when Brother T. Fathers, the official visitor, attended and gave a very interesting account; of the Order's progress. The Pride of Egmont Tent belongs to the New Zealand Central District, which has between 30 and 40 branches connected with it, having a total membership of about 2000, and an accumulated fund of nearly i>30,000. From the reports presented at the High Moveable Conference recently held in England, the Order showed considerable progress during the two years' interval between the meetings, the increase in membership for that period being 28,490. The Registrar of Friendly Societies' I report showed that 296 new branches had been instituted, and that for four- ; teen years the Recbabite Order had registered more new branches than any other friendly society. The progress of the Order may be seen from the following :— ln 1871 the membership was 23,219; 1881, 54,221; 1891, 146,035; 1901, 270,000. The annual income of tbe Order is £300,000, and the accumulated funds amount to £1,250,000. When one considers that this is a strictly total abatinence society, and has only the abstaining portion of the community to draw from, tbe progress is particularly gratifying. Bro Fathers concluded his remarks with a few words of help and encouragement to the local branch. The thanks of the Tent was tendered to the visitor, and a pleasant meeting closed about 10 p.m. A party which left Hawera for tbe Mountain on Sunday afternoon had a good time. One succeeded in reaching tbe top. At Wanganui Supreme Court sittings, Walter Johnston, a lad, on a charge of breaking and entering, was admitted to probation, as was also Jo3eph Lukashejoki, charged with dissuading a witness. i^wPEEA HOUBF, HAWERA.
