A syndicate has been formed to work a lignite and shale mine near Timaru. In a leader eulogising Mr Maxwell, late chairman of the Taranaki Harbour Board the Herald says bis successor, Mr Connett, is more in sympathy with the growing feeling that harbour extension is essential. The expedition under the zoologist, M. Herz, which was sent to Kolymsk by the St. Petersburg Academy of Science, has arrived at Srednekolymsk with the remains of a mammoth, which they have succeeded in excavating. The skeleton and hide are in a state of almost 'complete preservation. 1 In the stomach and teeth of the animal, which is a mule, the remoins of undigested food have been fonnd. The various parts were taken to St. Petersburg in a frozen I state. At a meeting of Wanganui citizens on Tuesday evening, Mr F. A. Krull, German Consul in the oourse of a patriotic speech declared that Germany was the real friend of England. The recent slanders emanated from a small seotion of the press, but the leading papers were in entire sympathy with Great Britain. He dwelt on the Emperor's manifestations oi frendship, and speaking as a man of oolonial experience, extending over 43 years, he said that German colonists enjoyed under the British flag a freedom such as they did not have in their own country.
