The resignation of Mr H. I. Babbage was accepted, and Miss J. E. Browne was appointed in his stead. It was resolved to offer the vacancy in the Technical School to Mr W. L. Browne. -_, WANGANUI BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL. It was resolved to appoint an additional assistant at a salary of not less than £175 per annum, and to invite applications and to give preference to one qualified to give instruction in commercial subjects. Scholarship Awards.— The Chairman reported that scholarships had been awarded ub follows— Senior : P. G. Bamford, J. W. 8089, T. N. Holmden, and Frances Grant. Junior: S. Lissaman, Ellen Dwyer, F. Christenson, Florence Grant, And John Hart. The report was adopted.— Chronicle. The polo match between Palmerston North and Hawera teams will be played on Wednesday, sth March, not to-morrow, as originally announced. . . The Chroniole learns that Mr H. Mowtell, of the Wanganui baths, who disappeared last weak, was seen on the Turakina Btation, boarding the south train, evidently with the intention of making a journey. The Waimate Horticultural Society's Annual Show will be held on the Recreation Ground, Manaia, on the 27th and 28th instant. The olasses open for competition will include pot plants, cut flowers, farm, garden, and dairy produce, bread, cakes, poultry, dogs, and oats, and entries will close on the 25th. On the second day of the Show there will be oyoling sports, when a wheel raoe of the value of £25 will be ridden. There will be a band in attendance, and refreshments on the ground. On the evening of the first day a concert will be given in the Drill Hall, and on the Beoond night there will be i a dance. The Manaia Society is a most progressive one, and this year it has excelled itself. That its enterprise will be duly rewarded we hope and expeot. At the Hospital Board meeting on Monday, the News reports, the Chairman called upon Mr J. W. Soott, as the oldest member of the Board, to present the late chairman, Mr F. P. Gorkill, with a large framed photograph of the members. Mr Soott, in doing so, Baid he had been associated with Mr Corkill on the Board for ten years, and had always found him a man of progress. He was hard-working, and, though they had not always agreed on matters under discussion, they had got along very well. Mr Corkill, in reply, said he had not expected anything so handsome. He had a lively recolleotion of the many kind things said of him when he I- vacated the chair, and be appreciated the motiveß which had prompted his late confreres to make the presentation. The Premier was entertained by the electors of his constituency at the Town Hall, Hokitika last night, and was presented by the County Chairman with a handsome worked address conveying the best wishes of his fellow councillors on the Westland Council, with whom the Premier was formerly associated. Mr Seddon made a spirited reply. Our readers will see by advertisement in this issue that the N.Z. agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society is to deliver a lecture 1 in the Oddfellows' Hall to-night. The work done by the great sooiety is world wide, and should enlist the sympathy of all. It aims at publishing the Scriptures in every known tongue, and has already done wonders in that respect. Mrs Spencer's topic deals with the work accomplished in Africa, and his address will be illustrated by aj choice collection of lantern elides. As the visit of the agent is only an annual one, it is to be hoped a large audience will gather this evening.
