CRICKET.

FOURTH TEST MATCH.

Received February 15, 4.8 p.m. Sydney, February 15. The weather was overcast, but fine and cool.

Lilley, playing attractive cricket, rapidly piled on 30, bringing his side's third century in view in five and a quarter hours. At 303 Noble took the ball from Saunders and in his third over Lilley attempted to^cut him, but sent the ball into Kelly's hand instead. He made five 4's, and batted just an hour. Gunn and Blythe did little. The innings closed for 317.

Sydney, February 15. A few minutes before lunch the Australians commenced their first innings, Trumble and Trumper facing Jessop and Braund. The former developed a rare pace, and became exceedingly dangerous in the slips, where Maclaren had four men located. Trumble was the first victim of the Gloucester captain. With six to his credit, the victim just tipped one, which Maclaren collared. One for 7.

Hill was rather badly struck on the stomach by a fast one from Jessop. Trumper, who was playing nicely, tried to place jessop in the slips, but Braund made a magnificent catch low down, and was warmly congratulated on his brilliant performance. Two for 18.

Gregory now partnered Hill, but had only added five when Braund snapped him in the slips, the ball going out of Maclaren's hands. This gave Jessop three wickets for 11.

Noble came next, and, profiting by the fate of his predecessors, earned the applause of the spectators by leaving the high pitched stuff from Jessop alone. He lifted one rather dangerously to off, but Gunn could not quite get up to it. The scoring became very slow, Hill occasionally getting in a fine boundary drive. The Adelaide man had got 21 up when he made a lofty stroke to mid-off, Jones getting under it. Four for 48. Jessop's average was now four for 20.

Duff joined Noble, and a long partnership ensued, though for an hour it was not productive of much. The newcomer followed his partner's example with Jessop, and showed some smart work between the wickets. As the afternoon wore on the sky became very overcast, with rain threatening and a bad light. The half century took fifty minutes to compile, and then Gunn relieved Jessop. The batsmen warmed up. Noble had taken forty minutes for five runs. Duff then got going, Noble following suit. At 77 Blythe and Jessop were replaced by Braund and Gunn. The batsmen, however, kept things going without anything of a brilliant nature occurring. The century was recorded as a result of a hundred and five minutes' play. At last Blythe sent down one which Duff played into LUley's hands, thus ending a good innings. The partnership added 71 runs. Five wickets for 119.

I Armstrong followed. Noble was doing the bulk of the scoring, with his fine leg strokes. His half century was registered amid applause, after two hours and a quarter of play. Rain commenced to fall gently half an hour before time. The light was also very poor, and play was stopped. The scores stood ; — Ausiralia.— -First Innings.
