SCIENCE SIFTINGS.

MILK IN THE FORM OF POWDER.

Milk in powder form, a process for making which was discovered three years ago by Dr. Campbell, of Jersey Ldty, is now ready for the retail market. Two factories are making 300 tons daily, and 70 tons were recently shipped to London. Dr. Campbell says the powder, which he calls "nutrium, 1 ' is obtained by recovering the solids of skim milk. He puts the milk in a concentrator, where water in vapour is forced from it, and it is then, dried, milled, and put up in bags. A well-known bacteriologist, Mr Conn, declares that all disease germs are destroyed by the process, and that one ounce of the powder makes a pint of excellent milk.

LONG-DISTANCE RAILWAY RUNS. A correspondent of the "Yorkshire Post" says the Great iSortheru way Company are about to establish additional "pick-up" water-troughs on sections of their main line between London and Newark, with a view to facilitate the running of the Scotch express and the West Riding trains to and from King's Cross, and to render practicable the running of the trains when necessary between London and York and London and Doncaster — distances of 188 and 155$ milete respectively — without a stop. At present the Great Northern trains run to Newark from King's Cross — 120 miles — without a stop. The longest run in Great Britain, however, is made by the Great Western train from Paddington to Exeter, 194 milea; the London and North Western Railway, by virtue of their run Euston to Crewe — 158 miles — ranking second.
