RETURN OF CORPORAL G. HA YWARD.
(from our normanby correspondent.)
On Friday evening a large number of friends and residents assembled at th? Normanby railway station to welcome home from South Africa Corporal George Hayward of the South African Light Horae. Mr W. Kowe, Chairman of the Town Board, welcomed the trooper borne on behalf of the residents of the distriot in a neat and patriotic little speech, and was followed by . Mr F. S. Canning, J.P., who also spoke appropriate to the occasion. George, as he is familiarly known, was looking somewhat thin to what he was when he left for South Africa, bat seemed to be in fairly good health with the exception of bis eye-Bight which i 8 somewhat impaired owing to the effects of a shell bursting " rather too close," and which removed a piece of his hat, but fortunately missed his head. Corporal Hayward, who is the third son of Mr James Hayward (well known throughout the district), proceeded home with his father, who must be congratulated on receiving two of his sons back safe after fighting for King and country, and we trust that Mr Hayward'B eldest son (Jim), who is still at the front, will also shortly be safe home again.
