CLEARING UP AT CHEVIOT.

SUGGESTIVE DISCOVERY.

(per press association.)

Christchurch, February 14.

Men clearing the large slip caused by the Cheviot earthquake on the Bluff road have unearthed a swag identified as the property of John Connor, a single man, aged 40, who worked foe Slohb, of Cheviot, up to October 29th. Just before the earthquake he was at Fort Robinson, asking when tbe steamer Wakatu would leave for Chriatohuroh and was told not till that day. He shouldered his swag and left apparently for Mackenzie, and has not been seen or heard of since. It is surmised he was caught in the slip while passing under the cliffs when the mass fell, and. his body is expected to be found in the debris now being cleared. It is understood that the Government has arranged to purchase 8000 acres of the Parnassus' estate in the neighbourhood of Cheviot. Tho Governor returned from Cheviot to-night. *
