WAR MEMORIAL.
(phb mass association.)
Hokitika, February 14,- - The memor|ftJ_J^ nonouVthe Westland ja^n^Vho served in the South African war will stand on the site originally selected for a monument to the memory of pioneer surveyors. The present memorial will cost about £400, and wtll be a striking gcanite structure.
Stimulated, no doubt, by the increasing number of street aooidents in Paris, the authorities of that city have hit upon an ingenious devioe for affording first aid to the injured. It consists of an ornamental bronze pillar shaped somewhat like a lighthouse, and containing, in addition to a letterbox, a folding stretoher, attaohed to which are printed directions for its use and the address of the nearest hospital. The' key of the reoeptacle is chained to it and plaoed behind a small glass window, after the fashion of the familiar Btreet fire alarm.
