MANAIA.
To-morrow afternoon, the new-riflo burls will be opened by Mr McGuire. M.H.8., when trophies donated by townspeople will be shot for. The band will be in attendance, and afternoon tea and refreshments provided by the ladies. A big attendanco is anticipated. Mr Deem. Stock Inspector, was in town on Monday, purchasing horses for the nsxt Contingent.
A large br.ike load left on Saturday afternoon for the Mountain House, returning on Monday. They essayed the climb, and almost reached the punamit, but on account of the mist and sinoko from bush fires, could obtain no view of the country.
Mr Staunton left on Saturday for his annual holiday, intending to visit Australia and Tasmania, returning by way of the Sounds and Southland. Mrs Staunton accompanies him.
Mr Elliott, relieving officer, is in charge of the Post Office during the absenco of Mr Staunton.
The local dramatic club has gone into rehearsal of a new fare?.
The Government and convent schools were opened on Monday last. The attendance of scholars afc lhe convent school will make a marked difference to the roll call of the Government school.
The funeral of the late George Kelland took place on Sunday afternoon last, there being a large cortege. The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. Rawnsiey.
On Saturday morning, a few of the representative townspeople presented Mr Halcombe with a purse of sovereigns as a mark of respect; on the occasion of his leaving Manaia. Mt and Mrs Halcombe left for Feilding on Saturday afternoon.
Some months ago Mrs Tait, .of the Manaia Hotel, missed ber watch and chain, which had been stolen from her room. A few days since the watch was returned, having been traced by the Police Department.
