At a meeting of tne Wanganui Borough Council on Tuesday night it was reported by the Gas Engineer that owing to the bad condition of the retorts a serious condition of affairs existed, and unless something were at once done he did hot know bow he would manufacture necessary gas during the winter months. In the Magistrate's Court this morning, several truancy oases were dealt with. His Worship said that it wbs as well that the attention of parents should be drawn tothe Act of last year. It was no use under that measure for parents to come to the Court and say their obildren were ill. If a child's name was on the register the parent was liable for its non-attendanoe, unless it was ill or came under grounds of exemption, when the parent must apply to the Chairman and one member or the headmaster of tbe school for an exemption certificate. The fine had been raised from, a minimum of 2s to a maximum of 10a. In future cases he (His Worship) intended imposing a fine of 2s 6d, but in aggravated oases the fine would be increased. ltv/as evidently the intention of the Legislature that case of truancy should not be dealt with too leniently.
