WEI-HAI-WEI USELESS FOR GARRISON PURPOSES.
Received February 12, 0.41 a.m. London, February 11. Lord Onslow, Parliamentary Undersecretary for the Colonies, states that the fortifying and garrisoning of Wei-hai-wei has been abandoned, the position being ineligible. As a sanatorium it will continue to be useful, and is a valuable concession. The Colonial Office will administer it. Lord Selbome, First Lord of the Admiralty, said the change was due to considerations of naval strategy. It was still valuable as a naval base.
